Gate or playpen?
A gate closes off a doorway, hallway or stairs. A playpen creates a contained play area anywhere in the room. Many families use both as a child starts to crawl and walk.
Measure the opening
Gates are sold for a specific width range, with extensions for wider gaps. Measure the opening and check the fitting method, because gates for the top of stairs have different needs.
Look at the fitting
Pressure-mounted gates need no drilling, but are not always suitable for the top of stairs. Screw-fitted gates are more secure there. Check each product's instructions.
Playpen size and shape
Panel playpens can be arranged in different shapes, while foldable and pop-up ones are easy to store and travel with. Check the dimensions against your room.
